History

Established in 1927, YMCA Camp Hanes is located at the base of Sauratown Mountain, approximately 25 miles northwest of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The original camp directors Harry W. Long and his wife began bringing boys to the mountainside to teach "good habits, self reliance, teamwork, and camp spirit under Christian leadership." These values are still at the heart of Camp Hanes. Memories of table cheers, Crystal Mine hikes, cabin inspections, hikes to the top of Sauratown Mountain, and campsongs such as "Follow the Gleam" are shared by generations of campers.
