Position: Creative Arts Leader

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Resident Director, or his/her designate, and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, The Creative Arts Leader will provide care for our campers and their specific program areas from Sunday through Friday.  They will also be responsible for working with the Associate Directors to work on the operational aspects of the Summer Camp Programs.  Including: provide guidance for the Arts and Crafts sessions led at camp, keep track of inventory within the Recreation Hall, take pictures of all camp, upload own and age group leader cameras to SmugMug at the end of the day, help to update and load content on our social media platforms, and be responsible for the cleaning personal areas and along with assisting to keep clean the whole of camp. Work with the Resident Camp Director to ensure a strong staff team and successful parent and camper experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Creative Arts Leader will work with the Associate Resident Camp Director and Senior Program Director to create a quality summer camp program helping campers develop a sense of accomplishment, belonging and character. They will be responsible for the weekly crafts for all program areas, social media marketing, and photos.
  • Responsible for nightly uploading photos to website.
  • Check in on drama classes and make sure all skits are appropriate.
  • Provide an emotionally and physically safe environment for our campers.
  • Exhibit personal habits, health, dress, speech, table etiquette and relationships with other staff that serve as a good role model to guest.
  • Implements character development, mission, diversity initiatives, and quality initiatives into program and member service delivery.
  • Ensure cleanliness of camp.
  • Assist with scanning during pool time. Swim with group.  Proper dress during pool time.
  • Manage appropriate behavior with all children and implement the Camp’s discipline policy when necessary.
  • Maintain positive work relationship with parents, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Follow all risk management protocol.
  • Ensure proper documentation maintained for all risk management situations.
  • Attend all training’s required for employment for the YMCA.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job works with the Summer Camp Director and Co-workers to campers who participate in our summer program.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Preferably 21 years of age. High School Diploma/ GED required; Associate’s degree from two-year college preferred. Experience and training significant for camp programs.

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest in children and significant evidence of emotional maturity, good moral character, judgment, integrity and leadership capability.
  • Enjoyment and appreciation of the outdoors.
  • Ability to create and work within a Christian environment so that each camper has the opportunity for spiritual growth.
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.
  • Desire to learn and apply experiences as necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to communicate in a positive manner with member, participants and staff.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Obtain CPR, First Aid/AED, and Oxygen Certifications within 30 days of hire. Complete the Legally Required Online Training’s through Redwoods. Attend all training’s and staff meetings related to the position.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Job requires staff to participate with campers in an outdoor setting throughout the summer. Staff are required to swim daily with the campers and actively participate in all activities that are scheduled.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee must have ability to assist in scanning and swim with campers during group swim time.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Principle activities

  1. Create a program that helps campers develop a sense of accomplishment, belonging and a focus on character traits of the YMCA.
  2. Comfortable in performing all duties in an outdoor environment.
  3. Supervise and ensure the physical and emotional safety of all campers.
  4. Follow the Risk Management and Program Management policies of camp and ensure proper documentations for first aid, child abuse, discipline situations.
  5. Manage appropriate behavior with all children and implement camp’s discipline policy when necessary.
  6. Keep Directors, Leadership staff aware of difficult or unusual situations. Share problems so that they can be solved.
  7. Maintain a positive relationship with supervisors, co-workers, campers and parents.
  8. Provide information to other departments when there is maintenance, kitchen or office needs.
  9. Share information from registration forms/confidential forms with counselors, nurses and leadership team.
  10. Work with kitchen staff to ensure smooth table/tray ratios and organization for seating.
  11. Work with the kitchen staff to meet any dietary needs shared by families in paperwork.
  12. Provide feedback and evaluation to the Junior Counselors twice during their experience.
  13. Work with the Summer Director to create a weekly staff assignment schedule.
  14. Ensure proper group behavior at assemblies and in the dining hall, lead daily graces and clean up procedures.
  15. Present taps talks, campfire skits, songs, and lead assemblies when required.
  16. Lead quality programs by example. Join into activities, evening programs, and classes with positive attitude.
  17. Exhibit personal habits, health, dress, speech, etiquette and relationships that serve as a role model for the guest of camp.
  18. Attend all trainings and meetings required for employment by the YMCA of NWNC.
  19. All other duties as assigned.

 

Staff Rules and Regulations:

In order to have a safe, healthy camp that is a good experience for all participants, counselors will refrain from:

  1. Using objectionable language
  2. Engage in or permit verbal or non-verbal shame of others
  3. Permit destruction of nature in any form (breaking of branches on live trees, picking plants, carving trees, killing or torturing animals, etc.)
  4. Permit vandalism of property in any form.
  5. Permit any littering.
  6. Engage in or permit excessive “horseplay” or physical “rough-housing” with campers.
  7. Make threats that are unwise to carry out or administer physical punishments, i.e. forcing participants to run laps, perform pushups, or any forced exercise in lieu of punishment.
  8. Be under the influence of or in possession of any drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products.
  9. Allow radios, iPods, cd players, etc. to be played when they will distract from the camp program or the natural setting.
  10. Drink soda, eat snacks or have any special privileges in front of the campers when they are not allowed to have them.
  11. Wear t-shirts, or clothing that advertises alcohol, tobacco or anything offensive. Wear bandanas, hats or clothing that would suggest gang symbols or membership. Must comply with the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina Employee Dress Code.
